UN expert cites 'credible' allegations of terror detainees at Diego Garcia

The U.N. torture investigator said he has received "credible" allegations that the United States detained terror suspects on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia _ a claim that directly contradicts statements by the British and U.S. governments.

Britain admitted in an embarrassing reversal last month that the remote outpost had been used by the U.S. as a refueling stop for the secret transfer of two terrorism suspects. But it said Washington denies that the island is a detention center.
